Abstract: The Anne Fausto-Sterling papers contain a number of publications from the early Women’s Liberation Movement and about revolutionary movements in Latin America. The collection also includes correspondence, syllabi, lecture notes, conference materials, and drafts of articles for publication. The materials date from 1960 to 2009, with the bulk of materials dating between 1970 and 1999.

Scope and Content Note:

The Anne Fausto-Sterling papers contain materials ranging from 1960 to 2009, with the bulk of materials dated between 1970 and 1999. This collection is comprised of a number of publications from the early Women’s Liberation Movement and about revolutionary movements in Latin America, correspondence, syllabi, lecture notes, conference materials, and drafts of articles for publication.

The collection has four main series, with further installations expected in the future. Each new accession is and will continue to be processed as its own series.

Series one contains materials from two accessions donated between 1992 and 1995. This series contains syllabi and course materials from classes taught by Fausto-Sterling at Brown University. Also included are issues of Women in Science. The materials are dated from 1967 and 1985.

The second series is comprised of eight accessions donated between 1998 and 2009, and is divided into five sub-series: Personal, Women’s Rights, Latin America, Science, and Journals. The Personal sub-series contains materials from various organizations to which Fausto-Sterling belonged including the Marxist-Feminist group, the National Radical Women’s Conference, the Women’s Development Corporation, and the Affirmative Action Monitoring Committee. Also included are materials from Rhode Island Organizations to which Fausto-Sterling belongs, such as the RI Mobilization for Survival, Women for a Non- Nuclear Future, and various RI Women's and LGBT organizations. Another component of this sub-series are drafts of both academic and political writings, including a review of Shulamith Firestone’s The Dialectic of Sex, an article entitled, “Women in Revolutionary Cuba,” and a copy of Fausto-Sterling’s testimony at the Rhode Island House Judiciary Committee Meeting on ending marriage discrimination. The majority of these materials are dated between 1963 and 2009.

The second sub-series in Series 2 contains articles and materials about the Women’s Liberation Movement, feminism, and women’s rights issues, including The Red Papers,

New University Women’s Caucus Materials, and “…To Form a More Perfect Union…” Justice for American Women. These materials are dated between 1961 and 2008. The third sub-series is comprised of published materials about revolutionary movements and humanitarian issues in Latin America, with the majority of material about Cuba. The main publications include Cuba Review, Cuba Update, and materials from the Cuba Resource Center. Other published materials and newsletters discuss Argentina, Chile, Guatemala, and Brazil. NACLA’s Report on Latin America and the Empire Newsletter and USLA’s Reporter are also represented. These materials date primarily between 1968 and 2008.

Sub-series 4 and 5 are made up of materials on science and feminist issues. Sub-series 4, Science, contains materials related to Fausto-Sterling’s teaching, as well as her involvement with the Kovaleveskaia Fund and Radicals in the Professions. Also included is a run of Science for the People from 1972 to 1989, and the Health Policy Advisory Center Bulletin from 1963 to 1987. The final sub-series contains published journals ranging from 1961-2008, such as I.F. Stone’s Weekly, The Review of Radical Political Economics, Women’s Studies International, and Women’s Studies Quarterly.

In the third series are materials donated in 2006. These materials include issues of Gene Watch, Human Genome, and "The Bias of Science" by Brian Martin, and are dated between 1979 and 2006.

Series 4 is comprised of materials donated in 2008 and contains five sub-series. Sub-series 1 contains drafts of, correspondence about, and images from articles and books written by Fausto-Sterling, dating between 1971 and 2007. The second sub-series includes materials on Fausto-Sterling’s professional activities, including multiple variations of her curriculum vitae, conference announcements, committee commitments, article and book review invitations, and article solicitations. These materials are from 1976 through 2007. Sub-series 3 includes drafts of and materials from conferences attended by and lectures given by Fausto-Sterling, dated between 1977 and 2006. Materials in sub-series 4 include academic correspondence written or received by Fausto-Sterling between 1987 and 2001. The final sub-series is comprised of course materials and lecture notes by Fausto-Sterling from 1971 to 2003. Some courses represented include the Biology of Gender, Social Issues in Biology, and Vertebrate Embryology.

Biographical Note:

Anne Sterling was born in Queens, New York on July 30th, 1944 to Philip and Dorothy Sterling. As a self-named “red-diaper baby,” Fausto-Sterling became an activist early in life, primarily involved with peace, civil rights and women’s liberation movements. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Wisconsin with a major in zoology. Following college graduation in 1965, Fausto-Sterling moved to Providence, Rhode Island to become a doctoral student in developmental genetics at Brown University. In 1972, she became Assistant Professor in Medical Science at Brown, primarily teaching courses in embryology. Six years later, Fausto-Sterling was promoted to Associate Professor, and in 1986, was granted full professorship. She is now Professor of Biology and Gender Studies and holds the Nancy Duke Lewis Chair.

Over the past thirty-seven years, Fausto-Sterling has developed numerous courses such as, “The Biology of Gender,” “Vertebrate Embryology,” “History of Embryology and Genetics in 20th Century US,” and “Social Issues in Biology.” In 2002-2003, Fausto-Sterling directed the Pembroke Center’s research seminar on “Theories of Embodiment.” Fausto-Sterling has been a visiting faculty member at many institutions, including Harvard University/Radcliffe College, Stanford University, Northwestern University, Mount Holyoke College, and the University of Amsterdam.

In 1985, Fausto-Sterling published Myths of Gender. The book drew great attention from both the academy and the mainstream media and a 2nd edition was released in 1992, translated into multiple languages. Fausto-Sterling’s 1993 article, “The Five Sexes,” published in Sciences again drew great amounts of attention and an Honorable Mention in The Best American Essays of 1994. Sexing the Body, released in 2000, won the Robert K. Melton Award from the American Sociological Association and the Distinguished Publication Award from the Association for Women in Psychology. Fausto-Sterling was the general editor of the series, “Race, Gender, and Science” from Indiana University Press and has published numerous book chapters, journal articles, and book reviews in both academic journals and mainstream publications.

Fausto-Sterling has served on the editorial boards of NWSA Journal, Signs, Journal of Homosexuality, Women’s Review of Books, Perspectives on Biology and Medicine, and Journal of Gay and Lesbian Psychotherapy. She has been an external reviewer for tenure committees around the country and a manuscript reviewer for both journals and book publishers. Fausto-Sterling has lectured and participated in conferences around the country and in Europe, as well as participated in a number of documentary films. She is a member of a number of associations such as, The Association for Women in Science, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Society for Developmental Biology, International Society for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Biology, and National Women’s Studies Association.

Throughout her life, Fausto-Sterling has also been involved with many activist organizations around Rhode Island, the country, and the world – primarily around issues of peace, non-nuclear proliferation, women’s rights, LGBT issues, and Latin American revolutionary movements and human rights.

There is one box with restricted access, but all other materials are without exception. The collection can be seen only by prior appointment as the materials are stored off-site and cannot be produced on the same day on which they are requested.
