8. 75th Anniversary, Pembroke College, 1966

The 75th Anniversary celebration of Pembroke College featured a three-day arts festival, including art exhibitions, dance performances, and poetry readings.  Preparations for the Anniversary revealed the paucity of materials on Pembroke, and from that point forward, alumnae trustees made a concerted effort to preserve the history of women at Brown.

Pembrokers’ classes had become completely coeducational by 1951, but the 1960’s saw a surge in their demands for more of a voice in decision-making, a liberalization of the dormitory rules, and equal conditions for female students and faculty.  In 1963, Elizabeth Leduc became the first woman to be promoted to full regular teaching and research professor at Brown, and female trustees were first elected to the Brown Alumni Association in 1965 .
